Simple Fish Soup Recipe

Follow this recipe for a simple soup with clear stock at home:


  1. Prepare a whole fish filet, 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, 1 tablespoon of Asian fish sauce, 1 teaspoon of garlic (minced), 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil, 3 shallots (sliced), 2 cups of canned tomatoes with the juice, 1 ginger (cut thinly), 1 steamed Thai chili (cut diagonally), 1/3 cup of cilantro (chopped), and 2 cups of lime juice.
  2. Slice the filet thinly (about 5 cm in strips). Place in a bowl. Add the cornstarch and fish sauce. Coat the fish evenly with the mixture.
  3. Stir-fry the shallot over medium heat for 5 minutes. Add garlic. After 30 seconds, add ginger, chili, tomatoes, and 2 l of water. Add the fish head and tail for additional stock flavor.
  4. Increase the heat before lowering it to simmer. Cook for an hour. Don’t forget to remove the fish head and tail.
  5. Add the fish and lime juice. Simmer for additional 5 minutes. Taste to adjust the flavor.
  6. Serve with fried shallot, chives, or fried garlic.


This soup is flavorful, but the ingredients are not too many. Enjoy this fish soup plainly or with steamed white rice.
